What is LASIK?

LASIK is an elective laser eye surgery that reshapes the and can correct a wide range of (myopia), (hyperopia) and .

The LASIK procedure consists of four steps:

1. Anesthetic eye drops are applied to numb the eyes for surgery. The eyelids are secured with a small instrument to keep your eyes wide open during the LASIK procedure.



2. An instrument is placed on the front of the eye (the cornea) to create a thin flap of corneal tissue. In most LASIK procedures, this instrument is a , which contains a surgical blade. In "All-Laser" LASIK, the instrument is an attachment to an IntraLase laser that creates the corneal flap with laser energy rather than a blade. Whether the corneal flap is created with a microkeratome or an IntraLase laser, one end of the flap is left attached to the eye so the flap can be returned to its original position after laser treatment.



3. The surgeon uses a small hand-held tool to retract the flap and fold it back on its hinge, exposing the underlying corneal tissue. The laser used to treat the eye (called an ) is then positioned over the eye and delivers a computer-programmed number of pulses of high-energy ultraviolet (UV) light. The laser energy ablates (vaporizes) a small amount of cornea tissue to reshape the front of the eye, enabling the eye to focus light more accurately



4. After the laser treatment, the surgeon repositions the corneal flap and the LASIK procedure is completed. The entire surgery typically takes less than 15 minutes (for both eyes) and is pain-free.



The corneal flap requires no stitches to stay intact. However, it takes several weeks for the flap to become completely secure and you should avoid rubbing your eyes for a week or two after LASIK. You will also be given medicated eye drops to use for several days after surgery to decrease the risk of infection or .
