The word "LASIK" is an acronym for laser in situ keratomileusis (sometimes also called laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) which is the descriptive medical term for the procedure.
In situ is a Latin term meaning "in its original position; in place." Kerato- is a Greek-derived prefix meaning "cornea" and mileusis means "to shape."
Hence, the LASIK procedure uses a laser to (re)shape the cornea in its normal position on the eye so the eye can focus light more accurately. |
